Shri Maha Avatar Baba ji
Shri Maha Avataar Baba Ji - “The living embodiment of “Sankhya-Yog” Philosophy”
Maha Avataar Babaji is a legendary Himalayan Yogi rather than an ordinary sadhu (Monk), who has been encountered by numerous advance Himalayan Yogis between 1861 and 1935. Even the great Yogi Paramahansa Yogananda, in his Autobiography have described Mahavatar Babaji's role in setting his ultimate goal of life and his Spiritual vision in sustaining this earth.
He is believed by many to be ‘ageless’ and some accounts estimate his age around 2000 years and according to another group of followers of Yogananda and the disciples of Lahiri, Babaji's age, family background, place of birth, Actual name and other ordinary details are NOT know to any one , as he is a self-realised “Sankhya-Yogi”, who is no more subjected to cycle of life and death and other attributes commonly associated with mortal beings.
Paramhansa Yogananda in his Autobiography for the first time in modern time introduced this mysterious and ageless Himalayan master to the world, who is believed to be residing in the Indian Himalayas for centuries or even thousands of years.
Mahaavtaar Babaji has been a spiritual guide (Guru) to some of the greatest spiritual Master’s world has seen. He has motivated them to carry out special tasks for larger welfare of Humanity. For this reason he is called a Mahavatar, meaning ‘a great incarnation of God’.
It was Babaji, too, who re-introduced the ancient science of Kriya Yoga, lost during the spiritual dark ages due to, as Paramhansa Yogananda said, “priestly secrecy and man’s indifference.”
The Mahavatar Babaji have motivated many of the Spiritual master’s to inspire world to forsake suicidal wars, racial hatreds, narrow religious sectarianism, and unsustainable lifestyle based on the concept of endless materialism.
Babaji seems to be well aware of the evils of present civilization full of inequality and growing materialism due to the influence Western economic model of Economy based on growth and urbanization and motivated his desciples to spread the science of self-realization through the Philosophy of Sankhya-yoga equally in the West and East.
Yogananda have frequently prayed out to "Babaji-Krishna” that means that Babaji is in incarnation of Lord Krishna, who gave the Philosophy of ‘Sankhya-Yog’ (The second Chapter of ShrimadBhagwadGita).
Regardless of Historicity, any one on the Path of Yoga (Self-realisation) must know about this divine ‘personality’ and seek his divine spiritual guidance in her/his Yog-Sadhna.
Mahavatar Babaji in Yogic literature
Shri Yogananda in his ‘Autobiography of a Yogi’ have narrated that great revered saint shri Lahari Mahashaya was also initiated into Yoga by the great Himalayan Yogi Shri Mahavatar Babaji in 1861and at the time of initiation ,Babaji directed Lahiri Mahasaya that he is giving The message and method of practicing “Yoga” to the world through him in this modern time (nineteenth century) to revive the science that Lord Krishna gave millenniums ago to Arjuna and was later passed on to Saint Patanjali, Christ, and to St. John, St. Paul, and other deserving disciples concerned about the welfare of Humanity and this Planet. Shri Yogananda have also mentioned that Babaji and Christ were closely associated and concerned about offering world an infallible "spiritual technique of salvation” for this age.
Later due to the efforts of Shri Lahiri Mahasaya, this knowledge described by Lord Krishna as ‘Sankhya-Yog‘‘ become known as ‘Kriya Yoga’, which literally means a Yoga of action. This ‘Kriya Yoga’ contains both the Knowledge (insight) envisaged in the ‘Sankhya’ Philosophy and the Insight and efficiency into Action (Methodology) known as ‘Yog’ required in the spiritual path (Sadhna)
In this way ‘Sankhya-Yog’ in a different nomination of ‘Kriya Yoga’ spread throughout India and outside India through different disciples of Maha Avataar, who were assigned the task of promoting Yoga in North America and Europe. Now this Sankhya-Yoga (The science of salvation) have reached almost every corner of the Globe.

Shri Bhaagwad Gita Chapter 10.Verse 26
अश्वत्थ: सर्ववृक्षाणांदेवर्षीणांचनारद: |
Amongst trees I am the banyan tree; of the celestial sages I am Narad. Amongst the Gandharvas I am Chitrath, and amongst the siddhas I am the sage Kapil.
Later this Sankhya-Yog become mix with many of the Philosophical sects like Jainism,Bhudhism and also become known as different Yogic Traditions , like Hatha Yoga , Kriya Yoga (because lord Krishna emphasized on Kriya , which literarily means ‘Action’ and Gita says ‘Yoga Karmasu koshalam’ (Yoga is perfection in action)
Shri Bhaagwad Gita Chapter 2.Verse 50
One who prudently practices the science of Action (Karma) without attachment gets rid of both good and bad reactions in this lifetime itself. Therefore, one should strive for Yog, which is the art of Acting perfectly and adroitly.
Ancient Indian thinker Patanjali structured Sankhya theory given by Kapila as a systematic path and divided entire Yogic path of sadhna into Eight (Ast), Parts (Ang), so it became known as (Ast + Ang = Astang) Astanga Yoga. In theory and practice it is same as Sankhya-yoga, only difference is in orientation.
